Exchange between Vienna and Boston

Guten Tag! This year I had the honor of being able to go on a Network Exchange between my school, Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart (in Boston, USA), and Gymnasium Sacré Coeur (in Wien, Austria!). It was honestly such an amazing experience. Even though my German was lacking, I have never felt more included. Everyone in the school was friendly and fun to be around! I was with 7B and 7E, very fun, global, and inclusive people! I even had the opportunity to join the Frisbee team, and a rowing team outside of school! I learned so much about the Wien culture, the city itself, and the people. Even our school systems are remarkable different. Going into exchange I had the quintessential nerves, but looking back on the experience I had nothing to worry about! My host sister was one of the nicest, smartest persons that I have ever known! I would tell anyone thinking about exchange to go for it! It is a once in a lifetime opportunity that is extraordinary! And of course everyone is always welcome to come to Boston! Auf Wiedersehen!

While spending three weeks in Vienna, Austria at Sacré Cœur Rennweg of March 2015, I learned a lot about Austrian culture especially schooling but also I learned much about becoming independent. As schooling is traditionally different from the many, many classes, to the early release times, to ribbon dancing in gym class on Fridays. I learned a lot from the members of 7B as well as 7E as they welcomed me with a lot of kindness. I think exchange is a great opportunity to understand and live in a culture completely different from your own. I was able to meet many new people, try new food, and experience a whole new world from the one I live in. I became more independent and was even able to navigate myself from school to home with ease by the end of my stay. I was able to understand my classmates despite a rather large language barrier. I definitely will be back to Austria as soon as I possibly can as it has become another country I can call home. If you are ever in America be sure to come to Boston and I hope we can welcome you as well as you welcomed me.
